The newest Arduino IDE 1.6.6 does not work:
Memtool displays "failed" while uploading. It could be related with another error occurring only with 1.6.6:
The IDE seems to start from a temporary direction - uploading leads Memtol to display "hex not found". After activating portable mode for the Arduino IDE, Memtool finds the compiled .hex, but displays "failed" as shown in the attached picture.
Reinstalling Arduino IDe 1.6.3 worked, again. Reinstalling 1.6.6 (just to be sure) does not work with the exact same procedure (empty sketch, e.g.).
