It uses SPI pins in centre of board, i believe.
If not, which shields have been tested and can the above shield be made to work, and if so how to do it?

Yes we have used this successfully with Sandisk SD cards up to 32GB.

Some people have used the SDFAT libraries but this is not something we have tried. The main_SD example contains all of the file functions that are normally needed.
