In addition to the Arduino IDE add-in, you can also develop applications for the ShieldBuddy using the professional Eclipse environment. This includes the UDE debugger which can optionally be run as a perspective. To get started with this, this doc is useful:

It does not cover specifically the ShieldBuddy default workspace but it give some tips on getting the UDE debug perspective running. At some point we will make a proper ShieldBuddy Eclipse getting started guide.
